The official end of support date for Windows 10 (version 22H2, Home, Pro, Pro Education, and Workstations editions) is:

October 14, 2025

What “End of Support” Means

After this date, Microsoft will no longer provide free services for Windows 10 users:

  • No More Security Updates: This is the most critical change. Your PC will no longer receive the crucial patches needed to protect it from new vulnerabilities, viruses, and malware.
  • No More Feature Updates: You will not receive any new operating system features or non-security fixes.
  • No More Technical Support: Microsoft will no longer offer technical assistance for Windows 10 issues.

Will My PC Stop Working?

No. Your Windows 10 computer will continue to function normally. However, using an unsupported operating system leaves you increasingly vulnerable to cyberattacks and could lead to compatibility issues with new software over time.

Your Options After End of Support

You have a few paths to take to secure your computing experience:

Option 1: Upgrade to Windows 11 (Recommended)

This is Microsoft’s preferred solution, offering the most modern, secure, and feature-rich experience.

  • Check Compatibility: Use the PC Health Check app (available from Microsoft) or go to Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update on your PC to see if your device meets the minimum hardware requirements for Windows 11.
  • If Compatible: Back up your files and follow the prompts in Windows Update to perform the free upgrade to Windows 11.
  • If Not Compatible: You can either purchase a new PC that is pre-installed with Windows 11 or a Copilot+ PC, or consider the Extended Security Updates program (Option 3).

Option 2: Migrate to a Different Operating System

You can choose to move to an alternative operating system, such as a distribution of Linux, which often has less demanding hardware requirements and is typically free.

Option 3: Enroll in the Extended Security Updates (ESU) Program

If your PC is not eligible for Windows 11 or you need more time to transition, the ESU program provides a temporary safety net by offering an extra year of security updates.

How to Extend Windows 10 Support for 1 Year (ESU)

Microsoft’s Extended Security Updates (ESU) program allows consumers to keep receiving critical and important security updates for an additional year, from October 15, 2025, to October 13, 2026.

Note: ESU does not include new features, non-security updates, or technical support.

ESU Prerequisites

Before you can enroll, you must ensure your device is ready:

  1. Your device must be running Windows 10, version 22H2 (Home, Professional, Pro Education, or Workstations edition).
  2. Your device must have the latest Windows updates installed.
  3. You must be signed in with an Administrator Microsoft Account.
